I needed to buy a new pair of jeans; my usual pair suddenly seem baggy, slips off my waist and hips until they are almost falling down. And whilst this might be trendy, the crotch hanging around my knees, it really isn’t me.

(I don’t know why my jeans are baggy: I don’t think I have lost weight or anything.)

So today I went to buy a new pair of jeans. I went to Gap; and I went to the Levi’s store. Actually, I went to Gap twice; or rather, I went to two different branches: the people in the first one were completely gormless, whilst those in the second were very helpful.

I ended up buying Levi’s. I tried two different styles, because I saw they had slim fit 511s. I used to wear these when I was younger – they fit tightly to the leg. The store called them “rock’n’roll” jeans. I am moderately tall, and they used to look quite good. So I tried them on.

They looked good: perhaps a little tight, but they are meant to be – my legs are quite fit (all that walking).

But they also made me look like a guy in his mid-forties trying to relive his youth. And whilst that might be an accurate description, it wasn’t the way I would like people to see me.

So I bought the standard fit, the 506s, instead.

I have recently found Gap to be quite close to my clothing needs. I never thought I'd see the day when a shop as trendy as Gap would sell anything that either (a) would fit me or (b) I'd be seen dead in, but their jeans are actually cut to fit me (I have a big arse and tree-trunk legs, and am old fashioned enough to believe that jeans should cover your underwear and not hang around your knees, and I refuse to buy two waist sizes too big just so I can get the things past my thighs) and apart from the ones that just say 'GAP' on them in big letters, most of their shirts and stuff are OK too.

Sadly unless they're US 550's, Levi's just don't make any jeans for people my shape. And women think they have a monopoly on clothes buying problems.....

Gap t-shirts are meant to be good value.

I thought their jeans - the standard fit - felt a bit cheap: the material felt lightweight.

And the slimmer cut that I was given to try on had pre-worn holes in them.

The way I wear jeans, I can make my own holes - I don't need to pay for that!

I wanted a "normal" pair of Levis, and ended up getting them from the vintage clothes store in the Grassmarket - opposite the red phone box at the bottom of Victoria Street.

With your old jeans - have you tried putting them through a hot wash to shrink them a bit?

They're quite old - would they still shrink?
