Autumn Leaves

I used to have my answerphone message suited to the season. At Christmas, it would play a rather cheesy Charlie Parker recording of “White Christmas”; spring would be Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring”; then Basie’s version of “April in Paris”, and several month’s of the Miles Davis/Gil Evans’ “Summertime”.



And then, for a long, long while, it got stuck on “Autumn Leaves” – the Cannonball Adderley/Miles Davis version – the definitive arrangement.

Driving south along the A83 the other day, I was listening to Jazz Line-Up on the radio, and they played a beautiful vocal version of the tune. I hadn’t really listened to the words before – I don’t think I have the tune with vocals – and concentrating in the car, they struck me as rather beautiful, in an October, melancholic way:

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winters song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Along similar lines, I recently read the Time Traveller’s Wife – I’ll probably talk about that some other time – but it contained several lines of poetry I rather liked. I don’t read poetry – it doesn’t make sense to me – but I did like these lines:

See if you can get your hands on Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley...she sings a beautiful version of it. That CD kept me sane when my grandfather was ill.

I have the old version, and it does a very good job of holding 200 or so tracks. And this one looks small enough to be worn on the lapel, or hidden in your pocket...

It is a lovely song.

I find Eva Cassidy's voice a bit too emotional to listen to - I am not sure if this is down to knowing about her life (and death) or not.

I think that's precisely the reason that album was so good for me back then. Bit of a release when you're trying to be matter of fact and functional in the face of chaos!

Although I did take progmeister's advice on this and only bought the live album...he reckons the studio albums don't quite do her justice (and who am I to argue).

Also: comment notifications are borked again, I think. *sigh*

I find the studio albums (the ones I've heard anyway) to be a bit squeaky clean production wise. The live album has an edge to it - a vibe that's missing from a lot of live recordings, never mind studio ones. She sounds happy, and the whole band's evidently having a ball.

It's the only CD of her's I listen to.
