Last week I included a little snippet in some meme or other about how I had spent several weeks up a mountian called Lupanga in the Uluguru Mountains of Tanzania.

Interestingly, the Uluguru Mountains have been identified in today's Independent as being one of the Earth's "final frontiers".

And I have been there!

It is interesting that they focus on the degree of endemism in bird and plant life; I would have thought that New Caledonia has many more endemic plant species, both in number and as a percentage. Been there, too.

"Lupanga" means knife-edge in Swahili - panga being a knife. Other Swahili words I know are mwezi and mzei - one of which means "wise man" or "village elder", and the other means "thief". Unfortunately, I can't remember which is which.

And jambo means "hi there, how are you doing?".

As well as being a Scottish football team. (Ask K if you don't get it.)

There are no tenses in Swahili. I am busy; yesterday I am busy; tomorrow I am busy.

You think K would know about football, why precisely?

Well, it is an Edinburgh thing rather than a football thing.

Hearts (aka Heart of Midlothian - probably the only football team named after a novel by Scott. But don't try this is a pub-quiz - there may be others!) = jam tarts = jambos.

What did K say?

I also know three words of Hausa: meaning turkey, duck and steam engine
