Yesterday evening, it turned out that most of the management team were having a meeting down memory lane: SB, DM and DT were all going to see the Human League at the Usher Hall.

This prompted me to exclaim, “I first saw the Human League at UEA in 1977, when they were still a trio,” – that is, before the BEF left and before Phil Oakey discovered that girl singers were the way to sell records; in 1977 – the silver jubilee – they had just released Being Boiled and Empire State Human.

I knew it was a mistake as I said it. Ewan turned to me and said, “In 1977, I was one.” And Ash said, “And I wasn’t born.”

Still, the jubilee fireworks were worth seeing. And I’m not the only one dwelling on the past: they have just played a sequence on tracks by Caravan on Bebop to Hiphop, dating back to 1972. (I saw Caravan at the Roundhouse… that would have been about 1974.)

And, back in 1977, the Human League were supporting Pere Ubu.

Had a similar experience at work when we were talking about memorable events...

Elder Colleague : I remember staying up late to watch the Moon Landing.
Me : That was about 2 months before my parents' got married.
Younger Colleague : I don't know when they went to the moon....( He's an 80's child...)

Worse, I also remember where I was when I heard that JFK had been assassinated. I was three at the time - it is my earliest memory.

(rises from bath chair and brandishes walking stick...) "I remember Tommy Gemmel scoring the winner in the European Cup Final."

I also remember seeing The Human League at the Appollo in Glasgow, after Joanne and thingy joined - a great gig, enlivened by the bouncers trying to stop us from dancing on the balcony. I thought they were killjoys, but I later heard there were some rather large cracks in it...
