Someone calls these drive-by postings...

I have a lot of things to cover, and will do so over the next few days.

But just now I am really looking forward to the start of the Proms...

Really.

The proms are on the list of things I don't get. I mean, I can see why others might, but I just don't. I think it's down to only ever seeing "Land of Hope and Glory" and identifying the Proms for ever after with hordes of drunken, Union Jack waving Thatcherite yuppies. Which is a pity, because, well, The Albert Hall, sunshine, smart dressing, oh, and music, too.

I've always viewed as being akin to gardening, i.e. something one can appreciate when too old to pursue other interests. There just isn't enough time to enjoy everything at once.

Hmm, this would fit in with the CD of "Baroque Adagios" I bought the other week...

Oh no no no... Not the last night of the Proms, which is all that you describe, and which I do not indulge at all; but the other 72 concerts, two months of music. It is just a great way to hear classical music - the programming is usually interesting (they put new pieces with things one knows already), and it removes a lot of the usual stuffiness of classical concerts.

I haven't been to the Proms live - I should have said "listening to the Proms on the radio..." but still, it is a great festival.

Ah - you see the two are synonomous to me. Possibly because that's all the coverage they get in the media I listen to or watch (um, everything except R3 and classic FM, basically).

I suppose it's similar to someone thinking that all there is to the Olympic Games is watching a stadium full of modern dancers light a torch....
