The evenings are so light that we have taken to sleeping with the curtains open, watching the fading sunsets as we drift to sleep.

At the other end of the night, the open curtains let dawn in; I have been waking early, brought on by the chattering birds outside.

The other morning, I woke up at 4am; it was light. Keen to drift back to sleep for a couple of hours before I had to get up, I put on my radio in the hope of some gentle piano music to lull me away.

Instead, there was an orchestra blasting out the triumphal last movement of Mahler’s 8th Symphony.

It was wonderful, though I didn’t get back to sleep.

Ah, that's what I was missing when I woke up at 4:15 this morning - gentle piano music. Alas, it just didn't occur to me to fetch my iPod, so instead I tossed and turned for a few hours.

Yup, I've been up and about at 6am the past few mornings. Damn it.
