rhythmaningYesterday, I went to look at the Christmas lights strung out along Princes Street. I like lights in trees - I think it a great pity that, in Edinburgh, they only put them on during Christmas; they add a touch of magic to usually dull evening street scenes.
Unfortunately, there were few lights on yesterday evening; though they had been on last week - we saw them as we went to the Queen's Hall on Friday - the ones to the west of the Mound weren't on at all.
This morning, I learned why: apparently, squirrels in Princes St Gardens have been eating through the cables! This year, the council changed to low power transmission cables, in an effort to be green; and the cables are softer, and the squirrels don't get much of a shock from them either.
They talked about it on Radio Scotland - interviewing a hapless councillor - but unfortunately, they haven't got the story on the BBC website...
Still, this is what the lights looked like last year!
