Being Boiled

Yesterday evening, it turned out that most of the management team were having a meeting down memory lane: SB, DM and DT were all going to see the Human League at the Usher Hall.
This prompted me to exclaim, “I first saw the Human League at UEA in 1977, when they were still a trio,” – that is, before the BEF left and before Phil Oakey discovered that girl singers were the way to sell records; in 1977 – the silver jubilee – they had just released Being Boiled and Empire State Human.
I knew it was a mistake as I said it. Ewan turned to me and said, “In 1977, I was one.” And Ash said, “And I wasn’t born.”
Still, the jubilee fireworks were worth seeing. And I’m not the only one dwelling on the past: they have just played a sequence on tracks by Caravan on Bebop to Hiphop, dating back to 1972. (I saw Caravan at the Roundhouse… that would have been about 1974.)
And, back in 1977, the Human League were supporting Pere Ubu.
