The shuffle on my iPod is determined to make me listen to Coltrane. In 105 tracks, it has thrown up four tracks from A Love Supreme (live and studio recordings), plus Ascension, something off Blue Trane and something unlistenable from the Olatunji Concert. (And this is on top of me playing Transition on CD on Friday night.)

But then, it also seems to have discovered an inordinate fondness for the sitar, selecting two tracks from Indo-Jazz Fusions as well as a track heavily featuring sitar by Courtney Pine.

I have no idea what it means, but it does seem to get its way.

Edit: ...and just for good measure, it is now playing Alice Coltrane, too!

Shuffles are preculiar like that. Mine keeps bringing up runs of the same artist too.

Doesn't four tracks pretty much cover A Love Supreme? ;)

In fact, the live version I have is all one long 45 minute masterpiece.

Well, A Love Supreme has four tracks... But I have the super-dooper deluxe two CD set - one CD with the original release, the second CD with a live recording from Antibes and four alternate takes from the original sessions.

And I noticed that somehow iTunes has the original in there twice - I must have reloaded it when I got the 2 CD set.

It has been preying on my mind over the past couple of days, so I am actually about to write about it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to say anything better than Ashley Kahn...
