I have just been out - and back. I went to an early evening concert – Scottish Chamber Orchestra playing Mendelssohn. Unfortunately, when I got to the church where they were playing, I was surprised to see a sign that said “sold out”. Irritating, because I had tried to buy tickets today, but the ticket office didn’t answer the phone. Oh well.

Whilst walking there, though, I was surprised how bright Venus was – hanging fairly high in the west evening sky. It was starkly beautiful.

There will be a lot of people thinking they’ve seen a UFO tonight…

Edit: I have just noticed that Scottish Chamber Orchestra are on R3 this evening, playing Handel, Musgrave and Mozart. Presumably not live...

Venus is remarkably bright just now. It always surprises me how many people never look at the sky, and if they did see it it would never cross their mind that it was a planet. Even very well educated people I've spoken too assume it's either a star, a satellite (even less likely) or an aeroplane landing light (plausible if you only look for less than 5 o 10 seconds).

I thought at first it was a plane - they often turn over Edinburgh before landing. So I stood still for a second, pleased to see that it too stopped.

It was very beautiful.

I missed the conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and the crescent Moon (I think it was a crescent - but then I didn't see it) in the autumn.

I saw it - it was on the first of December. I happened to be on a flight to Rome and had an excellent view of Venus passing behind the moon!
