Following [livejournal.com profile] matgb's post the other day comes another warning that all may not be well in LJ-land, which [livejournal.com profile] fruminousb linked to.

Just in case, I have exported all my entries - you can save the files as XML or CSV (I did both!) - going for CSV is easier, since it automatically saves the files for you with the year and month reference.

Ah. I'll look out for the [livejournal.com profile] matgb's guide for dummies then :o( I'd miss everyone so much!

Yeah, me too - I was wondering about moving en masse? But I am not sure what would provide the same kind of interaction as LJ.

Maybe I'll just have to use Facebook more!

Although of course they may not go bust...

I'll get on that later today, car MOT and other stuff had it as low priority "do when I've the chance" post.

But given that I'll need to backup and put my public content elsewhere as a trial run anyway, might as well do it if I get the chance.

In the meantime, some former LJ staff are working on a fully open source alternative called Dreamwidth, they've got enough funding to keep it going until they go live, as they plan to make it fully interoperable, I might get some people together to pay for an install of our own:

Oh dear.
Thank for the push to back up! Actually, I never thought of it as something I'd want to back up, but so much of my life is there now...
I've just downloaded and used this which was quick and gives me something that looks my lj but lives on my hard drive. Nifty.

ETA: oooh, and you can search for text and do all sorts of other cool things. Shiny.

I'll admit I couldn't get LJarchive to work properly! No idea why not.

Ah, I got it working now. It does seem a useful tool!

Do you think it's genuine or rumour though? I can't find much other evidence.

I hope that it's a rumor. :(

However, there have started to be posts from volunteers and staff that suggest that while the numbers in the Gawker article are wrong, there are big layoffs afoot.

But it would be great if it were a scam of some sort.

Hmm, yes, evidence. I also saw something in an employee's blog that may support the rumour. Or it may not - I couldn't tell.

I'm taking the approach of backing up to be on the safe side and hope that it isn't as bad as it appears.

Cutting staff from 28 to 8 indicates there are problems, I think. I took the view "better safe than sorry"!

From what I've heard from others, it was more like half the staff, rather than almost all the staff. There does seem to be something up, but that article probably can't be trusted for any kind of details.

Thanks for the post. I'm using http://hewgill.com/ljdump/ . And hoping it's not as bad as it seems, too.
