He made a crashing error of misjudgement the first time round - over the loan from Robinson, but that was years ago, and he was cleared of all invovlement in the Hinduja affair. Since then he's been a great Commissioner. The problem is, that whilst I tihnk he's well-respected amongst the westminster bubble, I'm not sure how broadly that's shared across the country.
Well, I have nothing to go on except his press persona: "the prince of darkness" and "king of spin" stick in my mind. But surprisingly - and rarely - I am more inclined to trust the journalists than Mandelson. I am afraid there is a certain arrogance that he emanates. Hubris, perhaps.
how funny, because I think of him as very quiet, very thoughtful - almost restrained. I guess that's all from meeting him though. Anyway, since as energy's gone to DECC and most trade now sits in DFID, he's basically SoS for the Post Office and Administration, so probably not too dangerous.
That is interesting: the perception one has of people in the limelight is often different if you actually know them. Perhaps that is why I have found personal interactions with politicians so interesting (http://rhythmaning.livejournal.com/237610.html).
