Others have told all the exciting things they got up to on St Valentine’s Day; and those lacking a sense of romance have told us what they haven’t done.

  • I gave my wife a couple of videos – Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” and its sequel (several years later), “Before Sunset” – I saw the first (and loved it), but we managed to miss the latter when it came out last year (largely because we failed to see a single cinema release last year..)

  • I had previously given her the new version of Pride and Prejudice – yeah, not that I like Keira Knightley – just in case she gave it to me (Amazon got it to me more or less on release date, but I reckoned my wife might see it in Tesco’s, and buy it!)
  • she gave me Amelie (which we saw together)
  • I got my wife some flowers: white roses and blue iris, which I ordered at great cost from our monopolistic florist at work
  • my wife got me some flowers – white roses and blue iris, which she saw on offer in Tesco’s
  • we walked up the hill
  • after fifty yards, my wife decided that she couldn’t walk in her high heels and we just had to get a taxi up the hill
  • the taxi driver got his easiest fare of the night
  • we went to a St Valentine’s night tasting at the Scottish Malt Whisky Society

There were five very good whiskies, but three really stood out (though clearly they were in the majority, perhaps the other two stepped back)

  • a 20 year Auchentenoshan* – “monkey blood on vanilla ice cream” – (monkey blood being the given name for the raspberry sauce poured over ice cream), which was delicious
  • a 35 year Longmore** – “candyfloss and fireworks” – a really rich, powerful Speyside, really excellent, full of rich flavours
  • and a 14 year Longrow*** – “Para Handy tales” – a peated Springbank, which tasted almost like an Islay, a lovely dram to finish the evening.

In the middle, we ate a lovely fish stew.

One down point: we didn’t get seconds!

And then we got a cab home (the second easiest fare of the night).

That sounds lovely :) What do the numbers mean about the whiskies?

Our Valentine's day was a bit of a washout. Mr Itchy was ill and so spent the previous night and the night of the 14th on the couch so as to not wake me with his coughing (he's sweet like that). I left for work early and didn't get home until very late (half eleven at night) because of TKD.

We'll do something nice when he's completely well (already getting better).

the first bit is the distillery, the second is the cask number

On the contrary. If I ever get you in a room together, I will learn how to use my computer.

Excellent selection of malts. I've always thought Auchentoshan is under-rated, not just because it's so close to glasgow, but because it's one of the few triple-distilled malts still around, which puts it in a different class to most Lowlands. Longmorn (not Longmore, sorry) has always been one of my favourite Speysides, and the Longrow is just a wonder. I don't usually think of it as a Springbank, but as another Campbeltown whisky. There used to be about 40 of them, and Campbeltown was as much a separate region for malts as Speyside or Islay.

Well done on all the romantics, too - but don't put "Before Sunset" on if you have anything to do later (like catch a plan, for instance). I loved it to bits.

I meant to comment about that. I loved Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.
