There has been an awful lot written about the latest tragi-comedy to befall Gordon and Alistair. Coming so soon after the Northern Rock debacle, too!

Thing is, every time I hear about the loss of confidential data 25 million people - and that is a mighty large number - it just makes me laugh. Perhaps it is just the scale of the thing - as [livejournal.com profile] topicaltim has pointed out, before this wonderful digital age it wouldn't have been possible to lose that much data without losing a good few buildings full of filing cabinets; now it all fits onto one shiny little disc.

Perhaps it is because I have no children, so I am not one of the people worried about details of my bank account being auctioned on eBay-for-fraudsters.

Perhaps it is the sound of so many politicians apologising without sounding sorry at all; or the sound of votes being lost.

Perhaps it is the stupidity of the whole situation.

But it still makes me smile.

'the Guardian's Simon Hoggart (who) wrote this morning that David Cameron was not so much shooting fish in a barrel as "harpooning" a porpoise in a bath.'

Well. I'm paid Child Benefit. That's just ridiculously stupid. I think people have become so over-zealous over some aspects of data protection they completely neglect the bloody obvious.
