Photo editors - any suggestions?

For the last few years, I have been using the version of Adobe Photoshop LE which came with my first scanner - it must be over seven years old.
I have been thinking of updating to the new version of Photoshop, but that is a different matter.
For the time being, I want to be able to edit photographs on my laptop, since I am going to be a way for ten days or so, and it would be useful to be able to do so, but I no longer seem to have the disc with Photoshop.
So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, easy to use, FREE photo editing program I could (legally) download somewhere?
Ta!

Maybe I should have another look!
