Edinburgh:
- It has everything a big city should – lots of restaurants, bars, theatres, concert halls, but…
- It is a small city, and I can walk to almost everything I want to within twenty minutes – except my office – it used to be ten minutes away, but then we were relocated to a greenfield site (bastards)
- It has a mountain in its centre – not too high, but quite steep, which is good for stretching one’s muscles after winter’s inactivity
- It has a small river, the Water of Leith, flowing through the centre, hidden from most of the city and surrounded by woodland – from March to November I walk or cycle along it on my way to and from work, and it makes commuting a pleasure
- It has a series of wonderful museums – particularly, the National Gallery of Scotland and the Gallery of Modern Art – which are just the right size to wander around in an hour or so; and they are free, so you can pop in to look at just one picture if you feel like it
- And one more to prove that I can’t count – it is quite far north, so the summer days stretch from about 3am to 11pm – and from May to August, there is always a strip of blue sky in the north, whatever the time of night
My Flat:
- It has lots of stripped wood
- It is across the road from the Water of Leith, and there are no buildings opposite
- It has a large sitting room, with a large bay window facing north, so we can sit and watch the beautiful evening sky in those long summer months
- It has lots of space (though I really must put up more bookshelves!)
- It is near just about everything one needs – shops, restaurants, pubs, the swimming pool… Everything!
Five Things Which I Don’t Like About Where I Live
Actually, there aren’t five. I could only think of one thing I don’t like about where I live.
- Most of my friends live somewhere else (though there is no easy solution to this one, since they are scattered around the UK, Europe, the USA and New Zealand)…
