How are people feeling about the Stern report?

I had expected that they'd be more journal-chatter about it, especially knowing the leanings of many on my f-list.

I am not sure that I can really get worked up about it, other than to feel a smug "told you so" (which won't stop me drowning, will it?).

I hope it translates into a bit more action.

Of course, I haven't read it - jeez, it comes into at 600 pages or something - but it has been all over the papers today.

I got to the bit about the EU, the USA, India and China acting in co-operation and went out and bought an aqualung.

Well once my Impreza falls apart, I'll buy new tyres for my bike - there was some nyaff on radio 4 today saying that he'd decided not to fly to China and incur all that carbon debt, but cycled instead - apparently it took a year for him to get there, and a year to get back. Well we didn't miss the smug little git (I really shouldn't watch Grumpy Old Men, it only encourages me).

Basically, I think it's up to us to dig our way out of the pit by coming up with better tech, and I believe we will - but then I'm an old Utopian at heart.

Well seriously. Have you heard the one about the iron ore that's mined in W.Virginia, shipped to a steel mill in China for processing and then exported back to the USA as finished steel? All this, of course, to circumvent pollution controls on US steel mills.

Yeah, it's sort of overkill + alrady knew most of it really. Still, nice to have some costings to wave at USians that still think it's a myth.

Which reminds me of the way that ships are transported from Europe to Bangladesh to be broken up because the regulations deem it necessary; and in Bangladesh, they are broken by workers without any protection.

Clearly, it is a crazy world.

Yeah I heard about that guy too - but I think he was trying to prove a point... They said it took him one month on the bike for every hour he would have spent in a plane. Would have been a hell of a trip, though!

More or less my views, too.

Me, I'm going to move to higher ground...

Actually, I wish him well (now that the Alsace has worn off) and am jealous that he could take two years off to do it.
