Orderly

In an earlier post – Solobsession – I talked about how a friend did things differently (but, she said, always the same).

Then my wife pointed out how I have my own habits…

She reminded me how I always do the washing up in a particular order; and how, when I have done it, I stack the dishes in a particular order. There is a reason for this, of course: actually, there are a couple, which are way too anal to go into here. (OK then: it dries easier; the drying rack doesn’t overbalance; and it makes it easier to put away.)

And then my wife pointed out that I have my CDs sorted in alphabetic order. Which I do: there is of course a reason for that, too: because if I don’t, I can’t find the CDs I am looking for. No strangeness here, not at all.

Except that this applies only to CDs. My LPs, my vinyl, are in random order; this is because I like the serendipidity of finding an LP I wasn’t looking for, and realising that I really have to play it immediately.

But not CDs; they have to be in the right order. And I separate out jazz and pop and classical. (Classical is not such a problem, since I only have a handful of classical CDs.) No happenchance here.

And minidisks: completely and utterly random - which really annoys me!

So: three formats, three completely different reactions.

Nothing if not rational.
