At the end of April, I went hillwalking with the club I go out with. I haven’t been out much in the last year – the weekend away in the Cairngorms was my first time out in six months or so – I took advantage of a good weather forecast to revisit Creag Meagaidh (pronounced “Craig Meggy”, if it matters to you).

The weather was quite superb – I caught the sun – which is amazing, since usually when the club ventures out, it is raining. I have high hopes of my next weekend away, now…

I did the round of Coire Ardair – three munros: Carn Liath, Stop Poite Coire Ardair and Creag Meagaidh.

Because of the weather, the views were tremendous: we could see Schiehallion and Ben Lomond to the south (as well as Ben More, the Glen Coe hills – Buachaille Etive Mor and Beag were clear – the Mamores and Nevis range (though not Ben Nevis itself); the west and north, Knoydart, Skye, Kintail and further away.

It was just stunning.

We had plenty of time; it was a most relaxed walk in the sun. It was just a great day.

A mountain rescue helicopter was practising in the coire. They were playing: landing and taking off, hovering over the loch – it was clear they weren’t in a hurry, either. It is always a curious feeling when I first see a rescue helicopter – I am glad that they are there (just in case I might ever need them), but it is worrying in case they are there to retrieve someone. I think I have only ever seen them out practicing, rather than rescuing.
