I recently went to Edinburgh Zoo. I don't really like zoos - I don't like the idea of the animals being caged, really. But my godson and his family were in town, and they were going to the zoo, so I went along too.

It was great: I like looking at animals, even if they are behind bars or glass most of the time. There seemed to be a lot of space for the animals, and it didn't seem too bad a place. (Edinburgh Zoo apparently has quite a good reputation.)

I ran out of steam after about four and a half hours; my godson and his sister were still going strong when I bowed out.

Here are some of the things we saw...

Meercats

Meercats - just playing, not having sex. Honestly.

Pygmy Hippopotamus

Sea Lion

Sea Lion

Tibetan Blue Sheep

Tibetan Blue Sheep. (I think. I can't quite remember...)

A rather beautiful dove-like bird

A rather beautiful dove-like bird. My memory really is letting me down...

Jaguar

A very beautiful jaguar.

The back end of a zebra

The back end of a horse zebra - I just loved the pattern.

The side of a zebra

The side of a zebra. I really, really loved the pattern.

Lion cubs

There were for lion cubs, playing just like kittens. "Cute" doesn't adequately describe them.

More lions cubs.

Resting rhinoceros

Resting rhinoceros. He was lying on his side, his little eye keeping watch.

King and gentoo penguins

King and gentoo penguins.

Penguin on parade

Penguin on parade: they let the penguins out for a walk around the zoo. Unfortunately, only two penguins felt like going for a walk - the others couldn't be bothered!
