  • Magazine: The Economist; Investors Chronicle; Jazz Review

  • Newspaper: The Independent during the week; The Scotsman on Saturdays; and Scotland On Sunday on… Sundays

  • Candy bar: Green & Black’s dark chocolate; or their white chocolate, which tastes like really delicious custard (and not like most white chocolate at all)

  • Cookie: my friend D’s homemade raisin cookies are pretty good, but since she lives three thousand miles away or so, and I rarely make it over for baking day, I haven’t had them in a while

  • Mineral water: tap

  • Soft drink: fair-trade decaff coffee

  • Alcholic drink: red wine; white wine; whisky – where to start?

  • Champagne: Piper Heidseick; Alfred Gratien; or Billecart Salmon; but in all honesty, I tend to buy cheap, lesser known marques

  • Lipstick: occasional use of lipsyl to stop cracked lips

  • Mascara: ha! (That’s a no, then)

  • Moisturiser: some stuff from Tesco

  • Shampoo: no idea

  • Scent/aftershave: Penhaligon’s – currently Endymion or Blenheim Bouquet during the day; LP No. 9 at night

  • Toothpaste: Tescos

  • Jeans: Gap or Levis – but never, ever button flies; I hate the things

  • Underwear: Marks & Sparks boxers and socks

  • Sneakers: Nike for exercise (like when I did the marathon); more usual casual shoes would be DMs

  • Watch: I can’t wear a watch, so I carry a pocket watch; it is a long story which I should really write a full post about!

  • Cellphone: a fliptop Motorola – it is a work phone

  • Portable music device: a minidisk player, but mainly for the radio it has; we also have a couple of CD players and some walkman cassette – again, for the radio

  • PC/laptop: MESH PC

  • Necessary extravagance: I have a few unnecessary extravagances – particularly the car, expensive wine and whisky (maybe they are necessary though…)

Green and black's white chocolate, oh yeah.

Marques, good word.

But, your car is a Ford Focus. By no-one's standards is this an extravagance.

But running ANY car when you don't really need it is pretty extravagent, I think. And it really isn't necessary.

ah so you're the person who buys the Independent.

what's bad about button flies? surely zips are more dangerous to flying tackle?

I second that emotion - button flies are the bees knees.

I like the Independent. But I don't have a view on flies, except that it's a good idea to remember to do them up.

I used to always wear button fly 501s, but discovered that a zip front jean was more flattering.

But you can undo 501s faster than a zip, and buttonfly never undoes itself, and never sticks - but it can chip your nailpolish/break a nail... - but when I wore 501 ButtonFly, I didn't worry about such things!

Did you know, that if you were so inclined, you could buy a new iPod, and they now have an FM receiver add-on - so you could chose to listen to the iPod if there wasn't anything to your taste on the radio!

Flies take me longer to open; you have to fiddle about to actually get them open, and then the buttons come undone at inopportune times.

Whereas flies open or close in one smooth movement.

This may have something to do with me being left-handed.
