Failed states.

The Economist published this world map of failed states:



It shows Columbia, Nigeria, Congo, Somalia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Iraq... and Netherlands.

I am sure it makes sense in the context of the article, but I was slightly surprised to see our close, tolerant neighbours highlighted like that!

As I said over in my lj, I'm not sure where they're getting it from as we still score very well on the FSI. If you look at the drug trafficking arrows, that seems to be more of the point. We're not actually mentioned in the web version of the article.

I scanned the print article, and didn't see Netherlands mentioned, but I am sure it is due to the drugs routes. Still, UK has several drug routes pointing to it, too - and we don't get highlighted.

I was surprised they didn't highlight North Korea, either!
