I was just listening to TNK (Tomorrow Never Knows) - on the radio. The original, by the Beatles, from Revolver.

It occurred to me that, for a child of the sixties, there are some large holes in my record collection: I have not one CD by the Beatles; nor the Rolling Stones, nor, in honour of Mr Strummer, Elvis (Presley, that is; I have loads by Costello, more than I know what to do with).

I probably have tracks by them, and I have a lot of tracks written by them, but no albums.

Not one.

I just looked at Revolver on Amazon, thinking maybe I should rectify this omission, but frankly the only tune that I would listen to would be TNK. So I think I'll just leave to the radio.

I've got some odd selected stuff. From the Beatles, I've got the White Album, which I genuinely love. I also listen a lot of Stones, particularly Let it Bleed, Exile on Main Street, and Some Girls.

Revolver is a great album. The thing to remember when listening is that it's NOT a 70s rock album. It predated and predicted the whole thing.

My personal favourite Beatles record is Rubber Soul though. The first record they made with no covers on it - it was when they really started being creative but hadn't lost the commercial edge yet.

You may also want to give Abbey Road a chance. It's marvellous too.

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH COSTELLO!!!

:-)

Did you see the documentary about Stiff Records on the TV recently? Huh? In my house it was an hour of me bouncing up and down and squealing, "I've got that one!" "And that one!" and wishing I'd been old enough to be cool and have been to see a Stiff gig, rather than just being old enough to be wistful about it. Happy days ...

It's not that I don't know the Beatles' material - indeed, seeing a performance of She Loves Yoy Yeah Yeah Yeah on TV is one of my earliest memories - but I have very little desire to listen to their music, on the whole.

His newer stuff - like the last ten years - I haven't listened to much: I have too many memories of the 70s and 80s records. Shipbuilding still sends shivers down my spine.

Costello is also responsible for some of the best gigs I've been to, too - including one blistering two-and-a-half hour set four years ago.

I think I am definitely more of a Rolling Stones man, myself!
