I have realised I have a second rule.
Somewhat cat-related, too, though not wholly feline.
It is that the front door must be locked with the mortice lock. That's because the Yale lock doesn't catch properly, and if it is windy (which, up here, it often is), the door can blow open. Particularly if the door to the stair is opened.
Of course, it means that people are locked in as well as locked out.
[Edit: one - no, two - major advantages of this: it is impossible to forget your keys; and it is impossible to get locked out!
