1. Who was your first prom date?
We don’t have “proms” in the UK. The first person I went to the Proms with was Catherine; the fisrt person I went to a ball with was Jane.
2. Do you still talk to your first love?
No.
3. What was your first alcoholic drink?
My parents gave me a glass of wine when I was ten or so. The first alcoholic drink I realised I liked was a medium sweet German wine called Niersteiner. The first drink I bought for myself in a pub was a pint of beer (Adnams, I think).
4. What was your first job?
I worked at the Puffin exhibition as a teenager
5. 1st car?
Vauxhall Chevette. It bearly went. It had to go.

8. Who was your first grade teacher?
How old is first grade? My first teacher at primary school was Miss Roberts. I had a crush on her, of course.
9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
No idea. Spain, probably, since I know I was in Spain at four or five, and I didn’t go by train or boat (I think). The first place I flew to without my parents was Israel, when I was nineteen – well, I was nineteen when I arrived back in the UK (having spent my nineteenth birthday in a youth hostel in Paris, eating jam sandwiches. My friend G. and I had decided to get off the plane in Paris instead of London).
10. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with?
I didn’t have to sneak out.
11. Who was your FIRST best friend and are you still friends with them?
I have no idea.
12. Where was your first sleep over?
I can’t remember “sleeping over”. We camped in the garden, sometimes.
13. Who was the first person you talked to this morning?
The woman in the newsagent’s.
14. Whose wedding were you in the first time?
I was a page boy at my aunt’s wedding when I was seven.
15. What was the first thing you did this morning?
Switch the radio on.
16. What was the first concert you ever went to?
In September 1972 I went to see Duke Ellington at Hammersmith Odeon and Emerson Lake and Palmer at the Oval. I don’t remember which happened first.
17. First tattoo and piercing?
My skin was probably first pierced by a polio jab or something when I was a baby.

I can’t remember. My first girlfriend was a girl called Kate, but I must have kissed before that. Mustn’t I?
20. When was your first detention?

21. What was the first state you lived in?
Innocence.
22. Who was the first person to really break your heart?
Penny. I was six.
23. Who was your first roommate?
I shared a house with Paul, David, Ingrid, Angela and Carol. I am still in touch with Angela (and will probably see her this weekend). I wasn’t talking to Ingrid by the time we left the house.
