Just catching up with all this - I was insanely busy and saved it until I'd got time to savour.
It's fascinating stuff. I find it's playing in my head as a film, influenced by so many road movies with - for some reason - shades of Warhol.
What everyone else said: by turn of phrase this doesn't sound so different from the 2007 you, and it's hard to imagine the 20 year old lamentables sounding half as grown up. I know the 20 year old lamentables wouldn't have done the trip in the first place and wouldn't have been able to deal with hitching and sleeping out. I've got much more adventurous and open-minded in the last 23 years. I'm not sure whether I'm relieved or regretful that I never kept a diary or wrote letters such as these.
I love the photos - you already had a good eye and the colours are so evocative. They inspire nostalgia for a place I've never been.
