I am not quite sure if A Love Supreme is such a good place to start - Coltrane can be quite intense.
You can't really go wrong with Kind of Blue. And someone I didn't include (because he appears on Kind of Blue) is Bill Evans (the pianist; there is also Bill Evans the saxophonist. Not to be confused) - although Evans' influence is seen in the piano records I picked. Check out Evans' Waltz for Debby, Sunday Night at the Village Vanguard (two sets from a famous live session at the Village Vanguard; these seem to have been re-released at the ludicrous price of £22 on Amazon), Portraits in Jazz, and Everybody Digs Bills Evans.
